Bridging Cultures: The Journey of HOPE’s Youth Ambassadors in Multicultural Storytelling

The Youth Ambassador Team, hosted with open arms by ISS-HK HOPE Support Service Centre, embarked on a one-month journey to explore the multifaceted world of multicultural narratives within Hong Kong. This group of nine dynamic Youth Ambassadors, representing a rich array of cultural backgrounds and spanning educational levels from secondary to university, set out on a mission to amplify underheard voices. Through the expert guidance of Dr. Chitat Chan, a professor at HKBU, renowned for his proficiency in narrative techniques, these young individuals were meticulously trained to document and share the poignant experiences of ethnic minorities across a spectrum of professions – including dedicated shop owners, charismatic radio hosts, and passionate solo artists.

In addition to the invaluable guidance provided by Dr. Chan, the Youth Ambassadors were also supported by the committed staff members at ISS-HK HOPE Centre. These dedicated professionals played a crucial role in coaching the ambassadors, complementing the narrative skills with practical insights and additional support, thus enriching their interviewing capabilities and overall understanding of multicultural intricacies.

Through their interviews, the ambassadors uncovered stories of resilience and determination, highlighting the challenges faced by ethnic minorities in Hong Kong and the extraordinary strengths employed to navigate these tribulations. Inspired by these narratives and committed to fostering greater cultural understanding, the Youth Ambassadors, drawing from the ethos of the Human Library Ethnography Project, are keen to share these enlightening stories.

By offering a glimpse into the vibrant, albeit challenging lives of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, the Youth Ambassadors hope to bridge gaps, cultivate empathy, and inspire a deeper appreciation for the diverse tapestry of identities that define our shared human experience. Join us in this enlightening adventure, as we embark on a journey of connection, understanding, and mutual respect through the art of storytelling.
