Resilient Voices of Ethnic Minorities: Insight from “Spectrum of Diversity” Event

The “Spectrum of Diversity: A Showcase of Youth Cultural Identity” event brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds to share their experiences as ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, shedding light on the challenges they face and the resilience they embody. Through engaging discussions and insightful reflections, participants like Suhani and Hadi Bi Bi offered poignant insights into their journeys and the importance of cultural identity.

Suhani, a determined and proactive individual, recounted her struggles with language learning, particularly in mastering Cantonese. Despite facing initial barriers, Suhani took proactive steps to actively learn Cantonese, seeking assistance from teachers and friends in her journey. Her unwavering positive attitude and resilience enabled her to overcome these challenges, demonstrating the power of perseverance and self-belief in navigating obstacles. Suhani candidly acknowledged that the most significant challenge she encountered was internal, emphasizing the importance of setting specific goals, maintaining determination, avoiding comparisons with others, and focusing on personal growth as key strategies for success.

On the other hand, Hadi Bi Bi, a talented photographer with a passion for storytelling, shared her unique approach to capturing the voices of ethnic minorities through photography. By using her lens to tell compelling stories, Hadi highlighted the struggles and triumphs of individuals within the community. Taking a spontaneous and candid approach to photography, Hadi emphasized the importance of walking randomly and capturing moments that resonate with the experiences of ethnic minorities. For instance, she highlighted the challenges faced by ethnic minority construction workers by photographing their backs, symbolizing their perseverance in seeking job opportunities amidst adversity. However, Hadi faced her own set of challenges, particularly in accessing government information written in Chinese and obtaining permissions when taking photographs. Despite these obstacles, Hadi’s dedication to amplifying the voices of ethnic minorities through visual storytelling underscored her resilience and commitment to advocacy.

Following the impactful sharing by Suhani and Hadi, the event’s MC welcomed guests Hkawn Lai Awng and Yunmeng Zhao to offer their perspectives and reflections. Hkawn, reflecting on Suhani’s experience as an international student learning Cantonese, shared her own journey and the challenges she encountered. Recalling moments when people questioned her decision to learn Cantonese, Hkawn emphasized that internal challenges often play a significant role in shaping one’s experiences, highlighting the importance of self-awareness, determination, and resilience in overcoming obstacles. Yunmeng Zhao echoed these sentiments. She expressed admiration for Suhani’s positive attitude and determination to learn Cantonese. She also shared her strategies in language learning and emphasized the importance of embracing diversity, fostering connections with others, and overcoming difficulties with resilience.

As the event concluded, the MC expressed gratitude to the guests, participants, and attendees for their meaningful contributions to the dialogue on cultural diversity and resilience. Encouraging participants to explore the exhibition showcasing ethnic minority stories, the MC underscored the importance of embracing diversity, celebrating cultural identities, and fostering inclusivity within the community.

The “Spectrum of Diversity: A Showcase of Youth Cultural Identity” event served as a powerful reminder of the strength, creativity, and resilience displayed by individuals like Suhani and Hadi Bi Bi in navigating challenges and celebrating their cultural identities. Through their stories of perseverance, creativity, and advocacy, these individuals exemplified the richness and diversity of Hong Kong’s multicultural society, inspiring others to embrace diversity, celebrate cultural heritage, and build a more inclusive and empathetic community.
